The Focus
The focus of the Communio retreat is redemptive suffering. Through encountering Christ in Scripture & the Sacraments, participants will enter into a movement of life, of giving to Jesus and receiving from Him, in which they offer the sufferings inherent in their struggle in union with the sufferings of Christ and become receptive to the graces God will permit them to receive as a result of their offering. Ultimately, that their whole lives will become a total gift of self to the Lord, the only one who can turn suffering and disorder into grace.
The Format
Communio will not be a “preached” retreat. Rather, it is a series of Lectio Divina’s and group sharings inviting participants to be active members in the gospel story. Through the meditations, participants will have the opportunity to internalize the movement of giving of self, especially their sufferings and struggles, to Christ and becoming receptive to His grace.
Guiding Principles
Communio is a retreat experience designed for Roman Catholic adults (age 18 and over) who experience same-sex attraction and/or gender discordance and others affected by these experiences who desire to live the teachings of the Catholic Church regarding human sexuality. Communio seeks to embrace those who have these experiences. Through prayer, fellowship, and accompaniment, Communio also seeks to invite those who have these experiences to an encounter with Christ and His Church as we journey together to holiness.

Regarding human sexuality, the Catholic Church teaches and Communio embraces that the human person was created in the image and likeness of God, male and female, and each person is to work toward accepting themselves and others based on this reality.
The goal of Communio is to deepen our relationship with Christ, especially through sacred scripture, prayer and the sacraments. The retreat does not have the goal to engage in argument or debate regarding the teachings of the Church. Retreat time will not be spent attempting to respond to debate or protests of Church teaching. Debate or argumentation is better suited to a different environment and is beyond the scope of this retreat.
